Monofrax® Alumina Fused Cast Crowns
In recent years, the glass industry in North America has begun a widespread and rapid conversion to oxy-fuel furnaces, prompted primarily by environmental regulations. These conversions have the potential to produce several benefits, including reduced NOx and SOx emissions, reduced particulate carryover, improved glass quality and higher throughput.
While emissions have been reduced, some additional benefits have been compromised by unanticipated problems. Many oxy-fuel furnaces have experienced increased corrosion of existing crown refractories. The resulting “run-down” of corrosion by-products into the glass bath leads to a higher number of product defects, increased downtime and, in some cases, premature crown failure.
Monofrax has performed extensive testing, working in partnership with numerous customers and glass market segments. The results point to fused cast Alumina refractory as the optimum choice for construction of oxy-fuel glass melting furnace crowns for most glass compositions.
